GILLIAN HNATIW
Gillian is an accomplished litigator whose diverse practice encompasses administrative law, professional regulation and liability, health law, employment disputes, general commercial litigation, and appeals. In particular, Gillian is one of Canada’s foremost practitioners in the areas of sexual assault, harassment and violence, including claims for voyeurism and the non-consensual dissemination of intimate images.
Gillian appears regularly before all levels of court, including repeat appearances before the Supreme Court of Canada. She has been involved in countless administrative proceedings before a variety of tribunals and served as independent legal counsel. Most notably, Gillian acted as counsel at the Coroner’s Inquests into the deaths of Ashley Smith (2014) and Katelynn Sampson (2016) and currently acts as Commission Counsel for Nova Scotia's Mass Casualty Commission.
In addition to her skilled advocacy, Gillian is renowned for her compassion and her human touch. She is particularly adept at managing complex stories and high stakes emotional proceedings. Clients trust her to offer advice that is both principled and pragmatic.
Gillian is actively involved in the profession and the community. She is sought after as a speaker and writer, and regularly shares her experience and passion with communities across the country. She is frequently invited to speak at legal conferences and seminars, and regularly contributes to mainstream and industry publications. Passionate about the advancement and empowerment of women, Gillian is the former Chair of the Women's Legal Education and Action Fund (LEAF) and frequently consults on issues of equality and diversity within the legal profession. She has acted pro bono in significant matters for both LEAF and the Canadian Civil Liberties Association.
